Atlas, a Titan in Greek mythology, is best known for his punishment of bearing the weight of the heavens on his shoulders. This fate was a consequence of his role in the Titanomachy, the war between the Titans and the Olympian gods, where he sided against Zeus. After the Titans’ defeat, Zeus condemned Atlas to hold up the celestial sphere for eternity.
Atlas was thought to hold the sky at the “ends of the Earth” near the Atlas Mountains in modern-day Morocco.
